Frankfurt Airport Continues Double Digit Growth in Airport Movements
As we inch closer to the halfway mark in the month of August, airport movement statistics supplied by AirNav RadarBox indicates double-digit growth for Frankfurt am Main International Airport, Germany.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic still encouraging governments to place restrictions around the world and domestically, they are not as restrictive as they were last year, which can easily be discovered in the data.
For a significant international airport like Frankfurt, this could potentially offer a more positive outlook as we continue to get through the Summer season.
The Numbers
The Image Above: Daily flights at Frankfurt am Main International Airport between July 30-August 10.
Between August 6-13, the airport will record around 851 movements, which is up 34.02% compared to the same period last year being 635.
The 635 figure recorded in 2020 was still down 58.39% compared to 2019's number of 1526 movements, which comes as no surprise given the pandemic only being a few months old at that point.
However, in the period previous (Being July 30-August 6), the numbers were around 10% higher, recording 935 movements compared to 643 in that same period last year too.
That being said, there is still a positive differential of over 200 movements extra compared to last year at this current stage, which of course is indicative of travel restrictions being relaxed across the different countries in Europe.
For the airport, we are beginning to see a pattern of increased demand activity at the weekends, with the rolling average between Fridays and Sundays being anywhere 950 to nearly 1,100 movements per day.
However, weekdays do remain steady, averaging anywhere between 800-900 movements per day.
Frankfurt's Popular Destinations
Two of Frankfurt's top 10 popular destinations are domestic routes, but the other eight are international, with some being popular tourist destinations. They are as follows:
- Munich International Airport - 94.9 average movements per week.
- Chicago O'Hare International Airport - 76.4 average movements per week.
- Hamburg Airport - 73.6 average movements per week.
- Vienna International Airport - 73.1 average movements per week.
- Incheon International Airport - 72.3 average movements per week.
- Paris CDG - 70.8 average movements per week.
- Palma de Mallorca Airport - 68.8 average movements per week.
- Amsterdam Airport Schiphol - 66.1 average movements per week.
- London Heathrow Airport - 63.6 average movements per week.
- Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez International Airport - 60.7 average movements per week.
What remains clear is that Frankfurt, like many other international airports, seems to be on more positive tracks.
With vaccination programs in full effect and restrictions beginning to slowly loosen, it will be interesting to see how long it will take to get to 2019 numbers, and whether it will be quick enough to beat any recovery targets of 2023 and beyond.
