The Busiests Airports in Europe Between July-August 2021

Based on AirNav RadarBox global air traffic data, we've listed the six busiest airports during July 3 - August 2 in Europe. Some of these airports are showing strong recovery above +70% and exceeding even +100% of commercial flights compared to last year.

The figures below correspond to all flights operated between July 3 and August 2 at major European airports. Additionally, AirNav RadarBox provides exclusive commercial flight statistics, with data on commercial flights operated over a 6-day interval (July 24-30) in Europe.

1st - EHAM / AMS - Amsterdam Airport Schiphol - 30,019 flights

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport recorded during the 31-day period 30,019 flights, which corresponds to an average of 968 flights per day. Consequently, the busiest airport in Europe during this period.

There were 4,932 commercial flights, and between July 24th and 30th, 1,010 flights were registered, and 7,040 flights (general/cargo aviation and business jet operators), corresponding to a growth of +76.57% compared to 2020.

The top five most flown destinations - 

1st - Paris - Charles de Gaulle, 2nd - Barcelona - El Prat Airport, 3rd - Frankfurt am Main Airport, 4th - London Heathrow Airport, and 5th -  Lisbon Portela Airport. 

2nd - LFPG / CDG - Paris - Charles de Gaulle Airport - 27,823 flights

Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, or Roissy Airport, recorded 27,823 flights departing from and arriving at the international airport located in France's capital, with an average of 897 flights per day, this period. As for commercial flights, there were 4,554 commercial flights operated. Between July 24 and July 30, 925 commercial flights departed and arrived at the airport, contributing to an increase of +24.50% over 2020 levels.

The top five most flown destinations - 

1st - Nice-Côte d'Azur Airpor, 2nd - Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, 3rd - Toulouse-Blagnac Airport,  4th - Marseille Provence Airport ,5th - Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino).

3rd - EDDF / FRA - Frankfurt Airport - 27,335 flights

The airport located in the most populous city of the German state of Hesse, Frankfurt, registered 27,335 flights and 881 daily flights in this period. 4,434 commercial flights were registered, and between July 24th and 30th, 898 flights were registered, corresponding to a growth of +54.83%.

The top five most flown destinations - 

1st - Munich Intl. Airport, 2nd Chicago O'Hare Intl. Airport, 3rd - Hamburg Airport, 4th - Vienna Intl. Airport Austria, 5th - Incheon Intl. Airport. 

4th - LEBL / BCN - Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport - 24,671 flights

The fourth busiest airport in Europe is Barcelona El Prat Airport which handled 24,671 flights between July and August, with a daily average of 765 flights. 4,158 commercial flights were operated through this time, corresponding to +102.65% growth in commercial flights.

The top five most flown destinations - 

1st -Palma De Mallorca Airport, 2nd Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez Intl. Airport, 3rd - Ibiza Airport, 4th - Menorca Airport, 5th-  Paris-Orly Airport.

5th - LEMD / MAD - Madrid - Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport - 23,050 flights

Barajas Airport also recorded over 20,000 flights during July 3 and August 2, corresponding to 23,050 flights (general/cargo aviation/business jet operators) with a daily average of 743 flights. Concerning commercial flights, 3,764 commercial flights were reported. For example, between July 24 and July 30, there were 757 flights with a growth of +71.66% over the last year.

Madrid - Barajas Airport commercial flight statistics (July 24-30):

The top five most flown destinations - 

1st - Palma De Mallorca Airport, 2nd- Barcelona-El Prat Airport, 3rd - Gran Canaria Airport, 4th - Tenerife Norte Airport, 5th - Lisbon Portela Airport Portugal.

6th - EGLL / LHR - London Heathrow Airport - 17,760 flights 

London - Heathrow (LHR - EGLL) - Konstantin Von Wedelstaedt - GFDL 1.2

And the sixth busiest airport, according to AirNav RadarBox data, is London Heathrow Airport, with 17,760 flights (general aviation/cargo/business jet operators) with a daily average of 572 flights. Between July 24 and July 30, 598 flights were registered, with a total of 2,905 commercial flights with a +16% growth in flights.

Conclusion

The start of the European summer, as well as mass vaccinations and relaxed COVID19 travel regulations, has boosted travel within the EU. As a result, the number of flights within the EU has sharply increased. The trend is set to continue.
