Manchester Airport Finishes 2021 With A 250%+ Increase in Traffic Movements

Manchester Airport in the United Kingdom finished the year on a high by recording a staggering 250%+ increase in airport movements.

The airport is currently in full swing in terms of movements as COVID-19 restrictions ease in countries around the world. 

There is however room for growth, especially with France imposing strict restrictions on passengers entering that country as well as other areas that the airport services routinely. 

The Numbers

Between December 24-31, the airport recorded 334 movements, which represents a 263.04% increase compared to the same period in 2020 where just 92 movements were recorded. 

However, 2021 numbers are still 78% lower than they were in the same period in 2019, where 420 movements were recorded by our systems. 

There were similar numbers for December 17-24, 2021 as well. Around 316 movements were recorded, which was an increase of 247.25% compared to the 91 movements in the same period in 2020. 

So what we can see here is that expectations for the first week of 2022 will represent an average of between 310-330 movements, potentially more depending on how movements go in the airport. 

Will 2022 Numbers Highlight Positivity?

Depending on the way governments react to Omicron, the latest COVID-19 variant, we could begin to see numbers on the rise.

However, if governments choose to lock things down again, then this of course will reduce the good growth that airports, airlines, and others have experienced. 

For an airport like Manchester, which has significant domestic, European and International connections, it is imperative that countries stay open in order for such success to continue.
